Airbus selects Saft lithium-ion battery systems to equip A350 XWB

(13/03/2008)
Paris, March 13th, 2008 – Saft, world specialist in the design and manufacture of high-tech batteries for industry, announces that Airbus has chosen its lithium-ion battery systems as the starting and emergency power supply on the A350 aircraft

After a cooperation on alkaline technologies since the origin of Airbus aircraft in the 70’s, Saft’s technical expertise and battery performances in the new technology led to this selection, which will enlarge the portfolio of available technologies for a suitable adaptation to each programme.

This will be the first programme in Airbus’ history to use this new battery system. This contract illustrates the successful adaptation of Saft’s 10+ years of research in advanced liion battery technology for specific, demanding applications.

The battery system offers a truly innovative solution and includes an integrated monitoring and charging system using proprietary Saft know-how in the relevant electrochemistry algorithms This programme will generate around 200M Euros of sales over the next 25 years.

“Saft is extremely pleased to be selected for this prestigious programme” commented John Searle Saft Groupe’s CEO. “We are very happy to continue working closely with Airbus for their high technology battery requirements”.
